ANTIQUE BLUE OPALESCENT GLASS FINGER SHELDON SWIRL OR MARKHAM OIL LAMP EAPG. A beautiful piece of hand-made early American colored pattern glass (EAPG) in the form of a lovely oil or kerosene finger lamp. The shape is identified in this book as Markham Swirl Band but the pattern also very closely resembles the Sheldon Swirl pattern pictured on page 287 of this same book. The font is a lovely pale blue color with a white opalescent stripe running through the glass.
It has a hand applied glass handle of the same pale blue colored glass and a metal collar with threads to hold a burner. I see no identifying markings on the lamp or the collar. This has been in my personal collection since 1999. The lamp has great color and is gorgeous as you can see from the photos!
I do my best to describe all items as accurately as possible and to the best of my ability. Some of my photos may be somewhat lighter or darker than actual to better show detail or color. However, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, or with requests for additional pictures. Our store has many unique and interesting items in several different categories from 35 years of our dealing and collecting antiques and collectables. This piece dates to circa 1880s to 1890s. It is in excellent original condition.
Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of my description of this item. There is a tiny bit of roughness to the curlicue at the bottom of the applied handle. I studied this with a loupe and believe it is a minor factory flaw from the making of the glass rather than any form of damage. There is tarnish to the metal collar and there are some tiny splits in the metal; see the last photo for a close-up of the worst of these. There is no cloudiness to the font; it looks as though it were never used.
Otherwise, there are no chips, flea bites, cracks, hairlines or repairs to the glass. There are signs of use and wear to the bottom of the foot that would be consistent with piece of glass of this age. Please keep in mind these photos can be blown up at least 8X-10X times normal, so anything you see will look 8X-10X times larger in the photos than it really is. Please note: if you see a dark spot in the photos it is from my camera and is not a mark on the piece. It will be either just to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on the right side of the photo. It is about 4 (10.2 cm) in diameter at the font and about 5.25 (13.3 cm) across the handle direction and sit about 3.625 (9.2 cm) off the table. About 10.125 ounces (286 kilograms).
On heavier items I will also offer a less expensive option, if available.
